What is the NMC OSCE?
The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a practical exam conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK. It is part of the Test of Competence (ToC), required for internationally educated nurses and midwives who wish to register and work in the United Kingdom.
The OSCE assesses how well candidates can apply their clinical knowledge, communication skills, and decision-making in real-life patient care scenarios. It ensures that nurses coming from outside the UK meet the same high standards as those trained within the country.
Who Needs to Take the OSCE?
International Nurses
You were trained outside the UK and are applying for registration with the NMC as a nurse or midwife.
Returning UK Nurses
You are a returning UK-trained nurse whose registration has lapsed for more than 5 years and who needs to demonstrate current clinical competence.
The Structure of the NMC OSCE (2021 Updated Format)
The exam consists of 10 stations designed to test various components of nursing care. These are grouped into three categories:
APIE Stations 4 Stations
- Assessment: Gathering patient history and vital signs
- Planning: Creating an individualized care plan
- Implementation: Delivering care based on the plan
- Evaluation: Reviewing effectiveness of care and next steps
Skill Stations 4 Stations
- Intramuscular injection
- Aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT)
- Fluid balance chart documentation
- Urinalysis
- Removal of catheter or cannula
- Peak flow measurement
Professional Values 2 Stations
- Professional values, ethics, and safeguarding knowledge
- Application of evidence-based practice
- Accurate clinical decision-making
- Communication and reflection
You’ll be evaluated not just on technique, but on hygiene, safety, and patient communication.

The OSCE can only be taken at NMC-approved UK test centres, including:

You will book your exam after receiving an Authorisation to Test (ATT) email from the NMC.
